Anyway I posted my F policy on here and some users said I was too tough. I teach 13/14 year olds though and they should know better , right ? My policy for plagiarism and cheating is :
First Offense - Failure of the Assignment / Test
Second Offense - Failure of Assignment / Test , Trip to the office , and detention
Third Offense - F in the class, for the semester.
Someone said the third offense was unfair - but really, who would try cheating 3 times if they know ? I hand out my policy at the start of the year, and I'm not too strict on the kids - I'm just strict on cheating and copying and at their age, they know full well what it is. Someone even said my late-policy is mean .. I give ample time for kids to finish. They always have about 1 %26amp; 1/2 weeks, and every day they're late it's -30% , because after THAT long it should be done since it's usually only a little sheet. If it's a larger assignment, they lose 15% a day.
Idk parents, should I alter my policy next year ? I only want real parents answering - not one's who feel kids should never fail and be allowed to get away with cheating. Someone said I should offer the cheater's make up tests .. I don't think that's happening though. Parents even tried to say that their kid ';didn't know they were copying';. How can you NOT know ? Especially by time #3.Am I Really too Harsh on the Kids?
I think you're too lenient. Those kids are 13/14 years old, so they do know better. At my university, plagiarizing the first time gets you an F in the class, and strike two gets you expelled from the university.
As for assignments - I just wouldn't take them, period. A deadline is a deadline. Kids need to learn responsibility. And you shouldn't have to alter your schedule for them.Am I Really too Harsh on the Kids?
Absolutely not. As easy as it is to plagiarize these days, kids need to learn to write their own work. You don't get to copy/paste in college and at work. Universities have sophisticated software to catch this.
Also, a deadline is a deadline. If you don't make a deadline at work, you are in trouble.
Kids need to start learning these lessons ASAP. Good job.
Depends, what grade do you teach? I do think F for the semester is a bit harsh but you should give them opportunities to raise that grade (extra credit, bonus assignments).
that is just fine for me because i never cheat nor hand in a late assignment. you are just trying to make them better people i get that.
Your policies are just fine. Parents coddle their kids to much these days instead of letting them experience reality.
As a parent, I would not have a problem with this policy. The fact that you hand your policy out at the beginning of the year shows that you have already given notice of your expectations so there is no reason to misunderstand the policy. I do not feel that you should alter your policy because students and their parents are either to lazy to read the policy and understand it, or they think that punishment will be waived. Children in the age group you mentioned should be old enough to understand.
In my opinion, your plagiarism policy is too lenient. At my college if you are caught plagiarizing, you fail the class immediately and your previous works are put up for review. If any of them are found to be plagiarized, you are kicked out of school and banned.
As for your late policy, I suppose it depends on the size of assignment. If you give them ample time to finish it (I mean, you're not assigning a 1000 word essay in 2 days, right?), then the kids should get off their butt and do their homework.
Parents today coddle their children too much. If their precious little snowflakes were caught plagiarizing a paper in the real world, they wouldn't get a ';F';, they'd get sued.
I'm in college and if we are caught doing plagiarism and cheating we automatically receive a F grade.. and risk receiving a F for the entire class and being suspended from school. Students need to be encouraged to use their brains, rather than taking the lazy way out and copying/cheating. My high school also failed student鈥檚 automatically for copying/cheating - you're not the only one with that policy. However in my high school we only had one warning not three, and they told us how to summarize text and cite work.
In the world stealing can get you in jail or a law suit. Better they learn now.
I will also add that it depends on the age of the students. Elementary students I would teach them about not copying/cheating but I wouldn't be strict. However, middle school and high school students are capable of putting in the work and have heard not to copy/cheat a thousand times before.
If anything you're being too nice! Why would kids ever want to turn their homework in on time if they're only going to lose 5% off it? You're being more than nice still offering to give them credit for work turned in late. In a real job, you're boss won't be nice for not having your work done on time, they need to learn this now before it's too late!
Cheaters should never be given a make-up test. If you couldn't be bothered to learn it the first time then why would you deserve a second chance!?!?!
Parents are WAY to easy on their children for the most part now!
